Modeling self-sustaining waves of exothermic dissolution in nanometric Ni-Al multilayers

2016

Abstract The self-sustained propagating reaction occurring in nanometric metallic multilayers was studied by means of molecular dynamics (MD) and numerical modeling. We focused on the phenomenon of the exothermic dissolution of one metallic reactant into the less refractory one, such as Ni into liquid Al. The exothermic character is directly related to a negative enthalpy of mixing. An analytical model based on the diffusion-limited dissolution [1] coupled with heat transfer was derived to account for the main aspects of the process. Together, several microscopic simulations were carried out. The first series were set up to obtain all the parameters governing the process, including the heat…

Validation of mathematical model for CZ process using small-scale laboratory crystal growth furnace

2018

The present material is focused on the modelling of small-scale laboratory NaCl-RbCl crystal growth furnace. First steps towards fully transient simulations are taken in the form of stationary simulations that deal with the optimization of material properties to match the model to experimental conditions. For this purpose, simulation software primarily used for the modelling of industrial-scale silicon crystal growth process was successfully applied. Finally, transient simulations of the crystal growth are presented, giving a sufficient agreement to experimental results.

Application of Selected Methods of Black Box for Modelling the Settleability Process in Wastewater Treatment Plant

2017

Abstract The paper described how the results of measurements of inflow wastewater temperature in the chamber, a degree of external and internal recirculation in the biological-mechanical wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Cedzyna near Kielce, Poland, were used to make predictions of settleability of activated sludge. Three methods, namely: multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), random forests (RF) and modified random forests (RF + SOM) were employed to compute activated sludge settleability. The results of analysis indicate that modified random forests demonstrate the best predictive abilities.

Creating a questionnaire for a scientific study

2016

Using questionnaires has become a permanent part of collecting data in scientific studies within the sphere of human sciences as well as other disciplines. It has been utilized already for nearly a century in collecting data. The first questionnaires were carried out on paper but nowadays there are e-questionnaires alongside it which can be carried out through e-mail or published on a social media platform (for example, Facebook). An often used method is also a survey which is carried out with a research project's own web page, association or company etc. A questionnaire has been considered as an actual scientific method of data collection since 1930s. However, it was already used a little …

Novel, automated, semi-industrial modular photobioreactor system for cultivation of demanding microalgae that produce fine chemicals - The next story…

2021

Abstract Recently, there has been increased interest in the use of microorganisms in the production of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and energy supply products, which is due to their rapid growth rate and ability to biosynthesize fine chemicals or biotransform specific xenobiotics. To achieve the desired scale of production and optimization of microbial cultures, it is necessary to design bioreactors that enable process automation, control of working parameters, reduction of microbial and chemical contaminations, and culture independence of climate conditions. In response to this need, an original, modular airlift-type photobioreactor system was designed and manufactured. This novel semit…

Reduction of Dinitrogen to Ammonia in Irradiated Heterogeneous Systems

1988

The recent developments of the research in the field of dinitrogen reduction to ammonia at mild conditions of pressure and temperature are reported. After a brief historical recapitulation of the traditional thermal process, the new routes for NH3 synthesis (biological photosynthesis, direct electrochemical reduction, and photocatalytic reduction) are presented and critically discussed. A particular attention is devoted to heterogeneous photocatalytic reduction performed by irradiating pure, mixed, and doped semiconducting catalysts in gas-solid and liquid-solid systems. The fixation of dinitrogen in aqueous solutions containing complexes and photoactive particulate systems is also reported…

Optimization of the sorption process of copper cations from aqueous solution by pine bark (Pinus sylvestris)

2020

This study examined the effect of the chemical modification of pine bark (Pinus sylvestris) on the sorption efficiency of copper cations. The results were interpreted using pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order reaction models as well as Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal models. The sorption experiments were carried out using the batch technique. The study indicated the effect of the competitive sorption of copper cations and hydrogen cations as well as the adverse effect on the sorption efficiency of copper hydroxides formed under alkaline conditions. The need to assess the measurement uncertainty in determining the basic parameters of the sorption process was indicated. It was also …
